Kirkpatrick Stands Up for Homeland Security
WASHINGTON – U.S. Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick, D-Ariz., denounced Republican attempts to tangle up funding for the Department of Homeland Security with partisan schemes to punish immigrant children.

Kirkpatrick issued a statement after voting no on several amendments and final passage of H.R. 240, the Department of Homeland Security Appropriations Act, 2015.

“I support a robust, fully funded Homeland Security," she said. "What I do not support is cynically tying this agency’s funding to a measure aimed directly at DREAMers – young people who were brought here as children and call our country home. Telling these kids they cannot attend school, contribute to our economy or enlist in our military is like telling them the American dream was meant for someone else. Instead of taking aim at children, Congress should pass a bipartisan Homeland Security bill – like the one both chambers negotiated last November – and then get back to the important business of comprehensive immigration reform.”

H.R. 240 provides 2015 appropriations for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security but includes amendments that kill important initiatives such as the administration’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. DACA was enacted to allow educational, work and military opportunities for young people who have known no other country but our own. Amendments in H.R. 240 would strip protection from hundreds of thousands of young people who already have come forward, passed background checks, obtained temporary protection through DACA, and have led law-abiding lives. The legislation could lead to the deportation of the hundreds of thousands of “DREAMers” who already came forward and received DACA protection. H.R. 240 also includes amendments that kill the Deferred Action for Parental Accountability initiative, which offers temporary protection from deportation and employment authorization to certain parents of U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents.
